Yes, remix.audio.LocalAudioFile uses Pyechonest track.track_from_filename behind the scenes.
How big are the files you are uploading? There is a limit of 50 MB on file uploads. This is more than enough for any compressed format of reasonable durations. But we do support WAV uncompressed audio files, which can be larger.
